The first communist government in
the world to be elected through ballet paper. Though Kerala State was formed in
November 1, 1956 the first general elections to the Kerala Legislative Assembly
was held during Feb -March 1957. The Communist Party of India (CPI) ministry
headed by E.M.S. Namboothiripad took charge on April 5, 1957.
Sankaranarayanan Thampi was elected as the Speaker and Smt.K.O. Aishabai was the deputy speaker. P.T. Chacko of Congress was the Leader of Opposition.
The government was dissolved on 31st July1959 by the union government by invoking Article 356 of the Constitution of India, following the Liberation Struggle which shook the state government.
